I quite simply LOVE everything about this tune, from the amazing vocal to the airy strings and then that huge big, bumpy & deep bass pattern. I can just imagine being in the crowd when this drops at a club! Definitely one of my favourite tunes so far this year. Check this out NOW!

Fresh out on Skint Records is this banger from Sonny Wharton featuring the well known voice of Roland Clark. Both Sonny & Roland are renowned for great releases and with both of them on the same track, it’s bound to be great!
Ok, so the main part of this track for me is the breakdown. Sat underneath Roland’s preaching vocals are some awesome snares, claps and a great rising synth. Roland’s words are very deep and meaningful and his tone seems to rise along with the synths before the drop. A great bassline pattern takes over with some high airy synths and a repeating one-liner vocal. All round, this is a nice release. I haven’t tried this out in the clubs yet but will be giving it a go this weekend! Check it out..

You may recall a few weeks back in a previous review, that you would be hearing a lot more from the name Barry Obzee, and I weren’t kidding!
This is a two-part release on Influential House consisting of an original version and a remix by Mike Newman. If you’ve heard tracks from Barry Obzee before then you’ll know his unique sounding old skool stab chords and his deep sub basslines. Starting off with the original, this is a perfect example of main room house music. He has married together some deep bass, stabby chords and a familiar horn pattern in an arrangement that breaks down and builds with a huge riser, into an almighty drop. This is a guaranteed dancefloor smasher!
Next up is the remix from well known Hungarian producer ‘Mike Newman’, this version couldn’t be more different! Mike has taken to a slightly more chilled approach to the track with a flowing warped bassline sat under some bouncy tech drums. The drums eventually filter down with the bassline, and the old skool chord pattern from the original comes in. After some more filtering, a long riser builds the track back up and drops back into the warpy b-line. This makes me want to dance!
Personally I’m torn between which version I prefer, they are both great. Grab your copy now!

This is a track that hit our inbox recently. Producers/Remixers ‘Phonatics’ from Australia sent over their re-work of the old track ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’. They explained that it isn’t an official version, but instead it was done for a remix competition and they missed the entry deadline by two hours, so they have decided to give this tune away completely FREE!!
It has a lovely infectious, deep bassline with some really choppy vocals before that well known vocal sits really nicely on top. This track just flows well with a nice stabby chord pattern, loads of breakdowns and drops. Have a listen and pick up your copy FREE!

Here’s a track that was released at the beginning of April but after dropping it recently at a student party on the South Coast and watching everyone go mad, I thought it was time to shine a light on it!
I’ve always been a big fan of the Hoxton Whores and in the past couple of years they have really stamped a unique sound into the tech house scene, even to this day I still occasionally drop their remix of Blueboy’s ‘Remember Me’ and now there is this fantastic remix of ‘Everybody Dance Now’. Sure, it still keeps some slightly cheesy elements from the original but they’ve also added some awesome tribal drums, big risers and a whopper of a bassline! No stranger to the Zulu Records’ ever-impressive release roster, Carl Hanaghan is back for a fourth outing on the imprint, this time with his summer-tinged update of Rhythim Is Rhythim’s classic track ‘Strings Of Life’. Entering the Beatport House Chart at #71 and with support from the likes of My Digital Enemy, Kryder, Cedric Gervais and Sonny Wharton, we caught up with Carl to find out just what inspired him to re-visit this iconic track and what’s in store for the rest of the year…
Hi Carl, thanks for taking some time out to chat with us – first up, what’s been happening for you in 2014?
Carl: 2014 has been a great year so far! On the road I’ve had some superb gigs with the highlights being the Gibson Club in Frankfurt, Germany and over in Utrecht at Winkel Van Sinkel in the Netherlands. I’ve had an EP released on Sonny Fodera’s label, Beatdown, as well as the release of ‘You Know How’ on my label Discopolis. My Digital Enemy have signed my rendition of the classic ‘Strings Of Life’ for their label Zulu Records and to top it all off I’m going to be a Dad in August this year so it’s very, very busy at the moment!
You’ve just released your own version of Rhythim Is Rhythim’s classic 1987 track ‘Strings Of Life’ on Zulu – how did this remake come about?
Carl: I had been playing the version by Soul Central remixed by Mark Knight and Martijn Ten Velden that was released on Defected in 2005 and then more recently the Supernova remix that they commissioned in 2011; I just felt that it was time for an update as it was becoming evident that it is a record that I will continue to play on and on…
What were your intentions when you set out to bring this classic track to the dance floors of 2014?
Carl: I’ve been finding a lot of my sets of late had been varying between Deep House infused with Tribal beats and I wanted to do something with this classic record that worked in both of these worlds.
The support list is pretty impressive – do you think you succeeded?!
Carl: Absolutely, I’m over the moon with the feedback on my rendition of Strings Of Life and I have to shout out the guys behind the label, they know how to work a record. It’s great to be featuring in those DJ’s sets all over the world.
This is your fourth release on Zulu now – you’ve enjoyed some great successes with your previous releases so you must enjoy working with the guys at the label?
Carl: For sure, my relationship with My Digital Enemy stems over 6 years now, it’s an honour to be signed to the label and I’ll always continue to support them.
Strings Of Life is your first solo release on Zulu – do you find you prefer working on collaborations?
Carl: I love working in collaboration as you have someone there to dance along to the track with you. Solo disco dancing is cool, but it’s better when you’re all together enjoying the vibe, you get more of a feeling that a record will work on the dancefloor.
You also run your own label, Discopolis – how do you juggle the production / DJing / label management sides of life?!
Carl: The best piece of advice I ever had from a great friend of mine was to use Microsoft Excel! My life is controlled by one spreadsheet! Schedules, diaries, time-lines and accounting, if I didn’t have it then I wouldn’t be able to do these things! I love what I do; it’s a hobby that became a job so looking at spreadsheets all day is certainly no chore!
What’s the big plan for Discopolis this year?
Carl: Discopolis has some superb singles forthcoming from the deep and soulful side of House music, including beats from Vienna’s Klaue & Tatze and Manchester’s Fake • Remedy as well as a few cheeky singles from myself! We released our first Miami compilation this year during WMC which was a huge success! I am so happy with how well it was received that I’m looking to piece together an exclusive Ibiza EP shortly!
And how about for you as a DJ / producer?
Carl: Loads to look forward to this Summer with three dates confirmed at Es Paradis in Ibiza for the clubbing superbrand Hed Kandi and I’ll also be returning to play at Creamfields on Sunday the 24th August!

Something on Leftwing & Kody’s label ‘Lost Records’, and a debut on the label for producer ‘German Brigante’. I was sent the promo of this a few weeks back and every time I play it I love it even more. The original version has a big deep, sub bassline sitting under so many deep elements, including some big choppy vocals and weird synthy stabs. Honestly, there is so much going on that it’s so hard to give it any justice through explaining, you’ll just have to hear it! Joining the original version is a quality remix from ‘Cuartero’ which has a big bouncy, and slightly warpy bassline. It kind of reminds me of the old garage days but with some huge deep drums. I really can’t wait to play this out on a big system, I can just see the crowds reaction.

Vanilla Ace is one of those names that is absolutely havin’ it at the moment with so many decent tracks coming out. This is a remix package out on Street King Records (sister label to King Street!) of Vanilla Ace’s ‘You’re Not Mine’.
There are four different versions in this release and we’ll start with the Bordertown Remix. Consisting of some nice pianos and that well known infectious vocal sat nicely over a nice flowing bass pattern. To me, this version isn’t a club version but more of a summer bbq version! Love it though. The next remix is by Jamie Antonelli and contains the original piano and vocal but a much deeper sounding bass pattern with a slight acid touch to it, very well arranged and has more ‘beef’ (for want of a better word!) than the previous. The third remix is by Apollo 84, this version has the old deep/funky Morales style house drums with some nice rhodes chords on the breakdown before a big bassline drop into something sounding really old skool and even on a slight 4×4 garage vibe, love this! Finally its the Souljackerz remix, now this my favourite of the four. It consists of a bouncy deep bassline with some choppy vocals that compliment the drums nicely, there’s even a little brass rhythm thrown in there too! Definitely a club track and one I will be dropping in the clubs soon. This one is already available..

Okay so I’m a bit late with this, but last month this one got released on 1605 and I thought it deserved a brief mention! Label boss UMEK once again teams up with Mike Vale to bring you this club banger. It’s a hard one to categorize as it has some real techy elements, some progressive arpeggiated synths and a big deep bassline so its a big mixture that strangely works well. I have already heard this getting some airplay and smashed out in the clubs and rightly so, if you haven’t got it already then why not? You need it!..

You may recall an EP I recently reviewed on the same label as this one, the label is called Arcko Digital and is definitely up there on my ‘top labels’ list for 2014. This is a fresh EP and a debut on this label for Spanish producer ‘Cor Caroli’.
A nice two-part EP starting off with the title track ‘People’. It has a huge thumpy deep bassline sitting nicely under some offbeat snares and some tight hats. I particularly like the breakdown of this track as it has what sounds like a crowd cheering in the background and some choppy drums and vocals sitting on top, a nice funky element to the track before a familiar spoken male vocal takes over and then it drops back into the bassline. Honestly, you need to hear this! It’s a must for any main room dancefloor.
The second track on the EP is called ‘Downpinpon’. It starts off a bit more relaxed than the previous track with some stabby rhodes chords and some airy strings. It sounds like it’s gonna be a pretty chilled tune then BANG, this almighty bass pattern kicks in and transforms the track into a mainroom stomper. Get this in your life now! I cannot wait to play this out. It’s HUGE!
